How to Get Closer to God in Your Everyday Life

Have you ever had one of those moments where you realize you've barely thought about God all day?

You woke up, checked your phone, got ready, answered messages, worked, ate, scrolled a little, did a hundred little things... and suddenly it's nighttime.

And then you think, “I didn't even spend time with God today.”

I think that's where a lot of us get stuck. We genuinely want to be closer to God, but somehow our everyday life keeps getting louder than our relationship with Him. And then we tell ourselves we'll do better tomorrow.

But getting closer to God doesn't have to mean completely changing your routine or suddenly becoming the person who wakes up at 5 AM to pray for an hour. Sometimes, it starts with a few small things you can actually fit into the life you're already living.

So, let’s look at a few things you can start doing today.

1. Start your day with God before the world gets to you

Think about your first 10 minutes after waking up...

For a lot of us, it's almost automatic. We reach for the phone, check the time, see a message, open Instagram, maybe watch a few videos while we're still lying in bed.

And there's nothing inherently wrong with checking your phone. But I've noticed how quickly it can change the way the rest of your morning feels. Before you've even had a chance to think about your own day, you've already taken in everyone else's.

Someone else's holiday. Someone else's relationship. Someone else's success. Someone else's problems. So what if you gave God those first few minutes instead?

It could be as simple as sitting up in bed and saying a quick prayer, or reading a few verses while you have your coffee. That's a simple way to make sure God gets a place in your day before everything else starts asking for your attention.

2. Talk to God about the ordinary stuff

You don't have to wait until something serious happens before you pray. Instead, start talking to God about your day.

Tell Him you're nervous about that meeting. Thank Him for something that made you smile. Ask Him for patience when someone is getting on your nerves. Tell Him when you're confused about what to do next.

Prayer can be a conversation, not just a list of things you need. It doesn't have to sound impressive. God already knows what's going on in your heart anyway. The more you bring your actual life to Him, the more natural your relationship with Him can become.

3. Use the habits you already have to bring you back to God

You don't necessarily need to find another hour in your day to get closer to God. Look at the things you already do.

If you always reach for your phone when you wake up, put Scripture there instead. If you drink coffee every morning, use those few minutes to pray. If you walk every evening, talk to God while you walk.

This is actually why I love a Christian app called Bible Lock...

If social media is usually the first thing you reach for, you can choose those apps and set a limit. Before you open them, you're asked to read Scripture first.

So instead of trying to fight a habit you've had for years, you can use that habit as a little reminder to turn your attention back to God. You can also put Scripture on your lock screen that changes every hour.

It's a small thing. But, hey, sometimes small things are exactly what make a relationship feel present in everyday life.

4. Don't just read the Bible. Slow down enough to hear it.

I think this is where we can accidentally turn Bible reading into a task.
You open the Bible, read your chapter, maybe tick it off your reading plan, and move on with your day. But sometimes you get to the end and realize... Umm, what did I actually just read?

Not gonna lie though, I've definitely had days like that...

So instead of worrying about how much you read, try slowing down. Read a smaller section. If one verse catches your attention, stay there for a little while.

You don't always need to read more. Sometimes, read less. Uh um, you read that right.

Take one verse that catches your attention and stay with it for a minute. Read it again. Think about what it's actually saying. Ask yourself what it tells you about God. Why did that particular verse stand out? Is there something in it that you need to hear today?

Sometimes you just need to stop rushing long enough to let God's Word actually sink in.

5. Don't disappear from God when you mess up

This one is probably easier said than done.

Sometimes you don't stop spending time with God because you don't care anymore. You just... drift.

You miss a few days of Bible reading. You haven't really prayed. Life gets busy, your attention goes somewhere else, and then comes that thought: “I've already messed up. I'll start again tomorrow.”

So you wait... for the perfect moment to start again. God knows when. But you know what? You don't need a perfect starting point. You can come back today.

Open your Bible, even if it's only for a few verses. Say a short prayer, even if you don't know what to say. You don't need to wait until you feel more spiritual, more disciplined, or more “worthy” of coming back. Just come back. He's still there.
One thing I want to leave you with before we close this off is this: Jesus loves you. Always.
You don't have to have everything figured out. You don't have to be perfect, and you don't have to earn His love by doing everything right. Just keep showing up, keep believing in Him, and trust Him with the rest.
And if you remember nothing else from this article, remember this: Jesus loves you. He always has, and He always will.
