How to Break the Habit of Constantly Checking Social Media

Okay, quick question... How many times have you opened Instagram today without actually having a reason to?

Maybe you were waiting for your coffee. Maybe you had five minutes before leaving the house. Maybe you were supposed to be working, but suddenly your phone was in your hand.

You open the app, scroll for a bit, then you close it. You put your phone down, and somehow you're doing the exact same thing again 10 minutes later.

The strange thing is that you don't always decide to check social media. Sometimes your hand just does it. Isn't that crazy? Yeah, I think so too...

And if you're trying to break that habit, telling yourself to “just have more self-control” probably isn't going to help much. You need to change the little things that keep pulling you back.

Here are a few ways to start.

1. Notice when you usually check

Pay attention to the moments when you automatically reach for your phone.

Is it when you're bored? Waiting for something? Avoiding a task? Or just because there's a few minutes of nothing happening?

Once you notice your triggers, try pausing before you open the app and asking yourself, “What am I actually checking for?” Trust me, sometimes you'll realize you don't have a reason at all.

2. Turn off the notifications you don't need

This sounds obvious, but I think notifications have a bigger effect on us than we realize.

That little buzz. The red dot. The “someone liked your post” notification. The random alert that makes you wonder what happened. You might not have been thinking about Instagram at all five seconds ago. Now you are...

So hear me out: go through your social media notifications and turn off the ones you don't actually need. You can still check your apps whenever you want, but now you're choosing to open them instead of constantly being reminded to.

3. Make your favorite apps harder to reach

This one sounds almost too simple, but seriously, try moving Instagram or TikTok away from your home screen...

The point isn't to make social media impossible to use. It's just to create a tiny moment between "I feel like checking Instagram" and actually opening it. Because right now, the whole process might take two seconds.

I'd say try to put them in a folder, move them to another page, or use an app blocker to limit when you can open them.
This is actually one of the things I like about Bible Lock. You can choose which apps you want to limit, and before opening them, you have to read Scripture first.

It turns that automatic “I'll just check Instagram” moment into a small pause, and maybe a few minutes with God instead.

4. Don't fill every quiet moment with scrolling

I do think that we've gotten very good at avoiding boredom. Waiting for your coffee? Scroll. Standing in line? Scroll. Finished your work early? Scroll.

Eventually, every tiny empty space starts feeling like something that needs to be filled. But you don't always need to fill it. Let yourself stand in line without checking anything. Look outside while you're having coffee. Take a short walk without listening to anything. Sit there and let your brain be a little bored.

Here's what you have to realize: you don't need to turn every spare minute into something productive. Sometimes doing absolutely nothing for a few minutes is better than filling the gap with another 30 minutes of scrolling.

5. Have something else ready when you want to check

One reason social media is so easy to fall into is that it's always available. The moment you're bored, waiting, or don't know what to do next, your phone is right there.

So if you simply tell yourself, “I'm not going to scroll,” you're taking something away without replacing the habit. Trust me, it ain't gonna work. Instead, decide beforehand what you'll do when that urge comes up. Read a few pages of a book. Make a coffee. Stretch. Go outside for a few minutes. Pray. Or even just sit there and let yourself be bored.

Keep in mind that the goal isn't to delete every app or never scroll again. It's simply to get to a point where you choose when to check instead of checking without thinking. So next time you catch yourself scrolling without knowing why, close the app and ask yourself: “Did I actually want to do this, or did I just do it out of habit?”

That little question can be enough to make you more intentional about where your attention goes.
